Does anyone have any information regarding The Loot of Lima on Cocos Island?

I was going threw some of my Grandfather and Great Uncle's belongings while getting ready far a yard sale. I came across a Journal written by my Grandfather regarding a Cocos Island Expedition in 1947 along with James Forbes, Charles Forbes and John Forbes. The journal details the journey through Mexico to South America where the flew to San Jose. There is also mention of a Mr. V.A. Keith. Details of when they got underway to Cocos Island and about the crew eating like hogs wasting food and engine trouble aboard ship which caused them to drift off shore due to an engine bearing. Then details how my Grandfather spotted the Isle 50 miles off course and convinced the captain to head for it. Talks about catching yellowtail and at one my point my Grandfather dives in the water after a 7' shark. Details on the climate, insects. The Journal ends with an entry of how My Grandfather was surveying the side of a cliff with a metal detector with a rope around his waist. I have no idea why the Journal abruptly ends, but it does provide a nice visualization of the trek up until that point. In my Great Uncle's scrap book there is a receipt for investment of $25 towards the expedition with a promise of return should the treasure be recovered. My Grandfather is of Portuguese descent. Apparently James Forbes had a treasure map that was handed down to him from his Grandfather who was a Pirate that helped stash the Loot of Lima. As story goes, the treasure consists of jewels, doubloons, and pieces of life size solid gold. Simon Bolivars march on Lima in 1820 caused the treasure, known as the "Loot of Lima" to be put aboard the English Merchantman "Mary Dear," which was later hijacked to Cocos Island by the pirate James Forbes. I am really curious to contact anyone with any information regarding descendants of James, Charles or John Forbes or information regarding the Loot of Lima, I am really interested in a possible expedition.

What do you think of the beginning of this?!?

There is no tip on the table when I go to clear it. Bastard, I think to myself as I clean up his mess of plates, mugs, and empty sugar packets.
I almost miss it. Right next to his dirtied napkin, there is a scrap of paper that I nearly snatch up with the rest of his trash. But the scrawled writing makes me stop and look at it.

"Be Back for You"

He hadn't seemed like the type who would gyp a waitress out of a buck or two, so maybe he would be. I doubted it though. Which frustrated me because it was clear the guy had money. He pulled up in a shiny silver BMW wearing a flashy black suit, as if he was on his way home from work, and a large gold watch around his wrist. He was handsome, with a bright smile and "come-hither" brown eyes. He'd even been talking me up, engaging me, looking at me from under those long eyelashes. Silly me to think he had been flirting. The guy doesn't even leave me a tip.

I take the note and crumple it with the rest of the trash, trying not to let the snub spoil my mood.


Outside, the fading blue sky grows dark and a drizzle of rain trickles down the windows. Just a few more hours for my shift. It's a slow night which means the hours drag on, but at the end of the day, there's not much to show for it. The other two waitresses had already left, leaving me to close up the joint.

On the last hour of my shift, he comes back. This time he's in dark blue jeans and a baggy sweatshirt. But his features are so striking, I'm sure it's him. He heads straight towards me.

"Come out with me tonight," he say, shaking the rain out of his hair.

"....And you are?" I retort with a tone in my voice making it obvious I have no intention of doing so.

"Cliff," he says, flashing a smile. But there's a darkness to his face that makes him less charming. No less handsome though.

"No thanks, Cliff."

"You're mad about the tip, huh? I thought you would be. I told you I be back, though, didn't I?" His eyes dart nervously around the diner. He's talking to me like we've been friends forever, go way back.

"Oh please, I'm not that thin skinned," I say with a snort, trying to brush him off. But he is not taking the hints and that's making me uneasy. I start to back up toward the kitchen door to get one of the chefs.

"No, come here," his voice is urgent. It is a demand, not a request. And I sure as hell have never been one to do what people want me to.

I shoot him a look, "Who the hell do you think you are?" I take another step to the kitchen.

Before I reach the door, his hand slips into his pocket and pulls out a knife. I freeze.

"Come here." He says again, this time moving towards me . . .

Pawn shop damages/ruins antique 18k gold pendant how to seek damages in virginia?

i went to a store called gregorys in virginia and he told me my 18K 5 pennyweight solid gold charm is worth $500, i asked him if thats what i could get for it (of course it wasnt) he offered me $300 for it. i politely declined thinking i'd like to know the true value or get a second opinion as he said he wasn't familiar with the company. so i too it to a pawn shop for a second opinion as i live in a very small town. they asked me about it and i told them exactly what it was. he tested it 5X and was weary of buying it. i had no idea that he was testing it nor did i know that he was scratching a chunk of gold off my key!!! it's ruined what was mint and a family antique passed down is worthless as a antique and is basically worth scrap. i was under the impression they had a machine to identify the metal composition and they wouldn't scratch off the gold! now whats done is done and i'd like to persue legal action against the shop for damages since the item can't be replaced to my knowledge. if they scratch as much gold off my item as they do everyone else that is stealing and with the price of gold being so high that chunk they got off me is worth something to them even if it is dust now.

how can i seek damages in a court of law. will my case hold merit? and how do i professionally going about filing charges, ive never filed any court papers before.


this item wasn't in pawn they did not take any sort of ownership of the item. i was just considering offers if i chose to sell it... it just went from my hand to theirs (they damaged it) then made an offer!

i went in today and told him that i noticed the flat edge on the round end of the key and my antique item was ruined. i said you scratched a chunk off of it and he said that's how they test it. i told him i didn't know he was scratching it and he ruined it, he said that's the only way to tell if it's gold. i stopped him in his tracks and told him that's not the only way to test for metal composition,.. scratchin is the most ineffective way... he accepted no accountability for his actions. and what was a mint condition piece of jewelry is now ruined and damaged!



let me compare this to another situation i've experienced. i was in car sales and a guy came to buy a car with a possible trade in. the mechanic took his car around to "appraise it" and didn't put on the E brake or have the car in gear. it rolled out and hit another car for sale we had on the lot. GRANTED they managed to cut a hell of a deal before they explained they damaged his car, but what if they couldn't cut the deal? and the car was his and not sold and the potential buyer damaged the item? this is gold we are talking about and above all an antique family treasure. they damaged my item and do not take responsibility... it's all i had left from my grandmother. now it's damaged and i would like to seek damages. me being in such a bad position and being super pissed about the item being ruined now i think it would be worth my time since it's gold and worth it's weight to have a case against them.

Do you like champions to wear gold around their waste or carry it to the ring like its a piece of scrap metal?

I think it's more classy and original to wear that belt like all the legends years ago did.It should be well respected instead of being thrown in the ring like it means nothing.The Rock and Stone Cold was some of the first wrestlers to carry it to the ring but now Cena,Orton and many others has done the same since that era..............IT'S A BELT.
